…if it seems like a slap on the wrist, that’s because it is…

A Saudi national has been sentenced to three years in prison on charges of inciting dissidence, terror-financing and money-laundering, in addition to fighting alongside militants in Iraq.

Jeddah’s appeals court endorsed the verdict on Thursday.

The man has been banned from leaving the Kingdom for a period of three years from the date of his release. He has also been fined SR4,000 for destroying his own passport. The trial court found the man guilty of inciting dissidence against the country’s rulers and encouraging fighting abroad, in addition to joining ranks with a terrorist commander in the Rabiah region.

He was also found guilty of protecting an extremist who had brought into the Kingdom several books that encourage people to fight abroad and making arrangements for him and his friends to travel to Iraq with the help of a Syrian accomplice. The man was convicted of using weapons in Iraq and collaborating with a terrorist who planned to persuade Saudi youths to join Iraqi militants.
