Abu Dhabi buys Manchester City

20080914_blues.jpgIt is hard to find a Manchester City shirt at the moment. Soccer fans of „The Blues“ are highly excited about the future of their home club. Big changes are up to come because the owner of the club changed. It it is not a „Somebody“ but it is the Emirate Abu Dhabi. The deal was finalized on September 1st and a follow-up of some huge investments of the Emirate: A $1 billion tie-up with Hollywood, a $8 billion partnership with General Electric, the $800 million acquisition of the Chrysler Building in New York and the multibillion-dollar investments in US financial heavyweights such as Citigroup and Charlyle.

One is not exagerating to call the aquisition a „coup“ for Abu Dhabi, because in the preceding months all attention had been focused on whether the Emirate Dubai would buy Liverpool FC, through a private equity house Dubai International Capital, and ist „Reds“-supporting CEO, Sameer Al Ansari. Dubai, home to the world’s tallest tower, an indoor ski slope and soon as well an underwater hotel, has had to do little work in stealing column inches from the capital…
