As the article from Borneo linked below states, Ramadan is the time of year that Muslims are required to make their zakat payments.

Zakat is a form of tithing and is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. It is required of all Muslims who can afford to pay. Customarily, Muslims are required to donate 1/40 of their assets to zakat.

There are eight required destinations for zakat and one of the eight is to those who are fighting in the way of allah, or jihad.  Islamic law texts specifically define such recipients as irregular forces and not military members who receive regular pay. In other words, zakat is designed to go to terrorists and insurgents.

So, when you think of Ramadan, think of zakat. And when you think of zakat, think of Al Qaeda…
