Airstrikes conducted by the US-led coalition destroyed 116 ISIS-operated fuel trucks in eastern Syria in one day, US defense officials said. A Pentagon spokesperson told the AFP news agency that the trucks were struck on Sunday in a single air strike near the ISIS-controlled town of Albu Kamal. The coalition has previously targeted oil trucks, but a coalition official told the news agency that this was the most they had hit in one campaign.

One of ISIS’s most important sources of funding is the black market oil trade. The terrorist group is believed to receive approximately $500 million per year in revenue from oil sales from areas it controls.

A coalition spokesman told AFP that the fuel trucks were parked in a loading area. They were being filled and nearing departure when they were struck. The US-led coalition commenced airstrikes on ISIS-controlled territory has year. Last month, in the wake of Russia’s incursion into the region, the US pledged to be “more aggressive” in targeting ISIS-controlled oil infrastructure.

To disrupt that revenue source, US officials said late last week that the US had significantly stepped up its airstrikes against infrastructure that enables ISIS to produce oil in Syria.

The Pentagon spokesperson told the AFP that Sunday’s air strikes were “part of that strategy to start degrading their financial ability.” The airstrikes were conducted by four A-10 attack aircraft and two AC-130 gunships based in Turkey…
