Wesam El-Hanafi, who has already pleaded guilty to material support for terrorism charges and is awaiting sentencing, is suing the US Bureau of Prisons, claiming that mistreatment in the UAE gave him deep-vein thrombosis.
Before joining the jihad, El-Hanafi worked at Lehman Brothers as a information technology engineer and had a wife and three children.
But in 2008, he met with two Al Qaeda members in Yemen, swore allegiance and taught operatives how to communicate covertly online. He later formed a “mini Al Qaeda cell,” wired money to jihadists and bought watches, potentially for use in time bombs.
