Last week marked the 20th anniversary of the first bombing of the World Trade Center by Jihadists terrorists.

Though that attack was not successful in its objective of bringing the towers down, it killed 6 innocent civilians and wounded 1,000 more.

As we have often said on SFW, money is the fuel for Jihad. Terrorism requires financing. This was certainly true of the February 26th, 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

The excellent Money Jihad blog has a very enlightening and brief post that traces the funding for that attack.

The attack itself cost no more than $15,000. There are two theories as to where terrorist Ramzi Youssef got the money:

1. Through an intermediary from Osama Bin Laden himself.

2. Directly from Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (often referred to as KSM). In 1993, KSM was not yet officially Al Qaeda’s operations officer, but he was a freelance Jihadist and he was also Ramzi Youssef’s uncle.

One aspect of the financing that is interesting is that Youssef later blamed a lack of funding for his failure to topple the towers. He told the FBI that if he had more money he would have built a bigger bomb to use in the attack…
